The Great Patent Bubble of 2011

John Pryor, Managing Director Europe, ICAP Patent Brokerage

Abstract

In July 2011 "Rockstar Bidco" (a consortium comprising unlikely bed fellows Microsoft, Apple, RIM, Sony, Ericsson Mobile Communications AB and EMC Corp/Massachusetts) , paid $4.5bn for 6,000 Nortel patents as part of a bankruptcy proceeding, when 6 months previously $400m was thought to be a good offer!

In this context the investment bankers are now asking how, where, why and when do we extract value from patents? And Lazards are now perceived to be an expert patent monetisation advisor!

This presentation will explore the following:
   * Has the market for patent transactions changed for ever?
   * Should companies now alter the way they manage their IP portfolios to achieve optimum value for patents assets?
   * Who are the expert advisors in the patent transactions field?
