Abstract
Getting business information out of large patent data pools has always been a complex task, commonly requiring expert know-how in various reporting tools or profound database skills to define selection criteria for analyzing patent data. Complex analyses have to be conducted by expert patent analysts, often associated with a lead time of a few weeks and significant costs. In addition, the results of such reports depend on the underlying quality of data, which is not always sufficient for meaningful business analyses.
Ad hoc requests from executives, such as "how many invention disclosures we filed in France in the last three quarters, where more than 2 inventors were involved, what costs were associated with this and, by the way, I need it for my meeting in two hours" are often impossible to fulfill.
This paper describes a new innovative approach for ad-hoc analyses of any complexity, where the required results can be retrieved in a few minutes. An intuitive, visual way of navigating through high-volume data allows for immediate results even for non-experts without the need of defining complex reports or the necessity to know the underlying structure of IP data. This intuitive approach also allows for immediately visualizing problems with data quality, which can be corrected on the spot.
In this presentation the approach with the tool WINPAT Analytics Plus will be explained with several examples for visual patent data analyses.
