Lecturers

The ISMT courses on the state-of-the-art MT aspects will be delivered by the internationally renowned researchers:

Andrew Way, PhD, EAMT president; long term EAMT and IAMT boards member; Editor-in-Chief for the journal Machine Translation; professor, Dublin City University, Ireland.

Professor Andy Way worked at the University of Essex, UK, on the Eurotra MT project from 1988 to 1991. He joined DCU in 1991 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2001 and Associate Professor in 2006. He was a DCU Senior Albert College Fellow 2002-03, and is an IBM Centers for Advanced Studies Scientist 2003-date and an SFI Fellow 2005-ongoing. Andrew has been awarded grants totalling over 4 million since 2000, and over 4.5 million euro in total. He is the CNGL co-ordinator for Integrated Language Technologies and work-package leader for ILT.1. Andy Way's research interests include all areas of Machine Translation: rule-based MT, example-based MT, statistical MT, hybrid models of MT, evaluation, teaching MT, etc. Andy is Editor-in-Chief for the journal Machine Translation. Robert Frederking, PhD, AMTA vice-president, 2004-2008; long term IAMT board member; Senior Systems Scientist, Language Technologies Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, US.

Dr. Robert Frederking is a Senior Systems Scientist (research faculty) at the Language Technologies Institute (LTI) in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, where he is the Chair of the LTI's graduate programs. He is currently working on projects in speech translation and other language technologies. He was the leader of multiple projects in rapid-deployment MT, speech, and wearable computers to produce a wearable speech-to-speech translator that could be adapted quickly to new languages. Robert Frederking's research interests are Speech to Speech MT, Rapid-Development Wide-Coverage MT, Question Answering, and most aspects of natural language processing. He is also interested in the design and implementation of software for portable applications, and issues of real field use versus laboratory demonstrations. Read more.
 
 
Harold Somers, PhD, long-term EAMT and IAMT boards member; Editor-in-Chief for the journal Machine Translation (1996-2008) Emeritus Professor of Language Engineering, University of Manchester, UK.

Professor Harold Somers throughout the course of his research and teaching career has focused on all aspects of Machine Translation and related technologies, - general computational linguistics, corpus linguistics, and other more general linguistics topics, as well as programming languages. From 1996 to 2007 Harold was Editor-in-Chief for the journal Machine Translation where he now remains on the editorial board. He is a co-author and editor of a number of books widely used at universities all over the world for teaching MT, including An Introduction to Machine Translation , Readings In Machine Translation, Computers and Translation: A Translator's Guide. Harold is now a Visiting Professor at CNGL Dublin City University, Ireland, and is oganizer of the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad. Read more.
 
 
Svetlana Sheremetyeva, PhD (Habilitation), EAMT member and conference organizer; adjunct professor, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark; professor, South Ural State University, Chelyabinsk, Russia.

Professor Svetlana Sheremetyeva has a considerable research and teaching experience accumulated during many years as Professor and head of Foreign language Department at South Ural State University (Russia), Key Researcher at the Computing Research Lab of New Mexico State University (USA), lecturer in computational linguistics and MT at Uppsala University (Sweden) and Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), as well as different international Summer schools, e.g., Summer School in Language Engineering, NMSU, USA, 1999 and NATO Advanced Study Institute on Language Engineering for Lesser Studied Languages, Turkey, 2000. Her research interests include several areas of natural language processing, - Machine Translation sublanguage analysis, multilingual text generation, acquiring knowledge for natural language processing in natural languages.
